The box office slump of 2005 remains in full effect, though The Amityville Horror proved yet again that scary movies are still a potent first-weekend draw.
The remake of the 1979 cult classic grossed $23.3 million this weekend, easily claiming the No. 1 spot on the box office chart. But since Amityville was the only new wide release of the weekend, some returning releases held on decently. Sahara placed second with $13.1 million, while Fever Pitch hung on to third place with $8.8 million.
And since this is the calm before the summer-movie storm (the ''summer'' movie season begins May 6 with Kingdom of Heaven), Sin City and Guess Who were able to stay in the top five despite earning $6.7 million and $4.9 million, respectively. You won't be seeing numbers like that in the top five for long.
