Breaking up: that's hot. Everyone in Hollywood is doing it — Jen and Brad, Charlie and Denise, and now, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie. OK, you can't actually divorce your best friend, but you can still make the split official by having your publicist issue a statement, which is what the hotel heiress did on Tuesday. ''It's no big secret that Nicole and I are no longer friends,'' Hilton said in the statement, first reported by the New York Daily News. ''Nicole knows what she did, and that's all I'm ever going to say about it.''

Richie herself hasn't commented on the split (at press time, her publicist had yet to respond to EW.com's request for a comment), but it apparently means the end of the pair's escapades together on Fox's The Simple Life as well. Last week, Hilton announced that another pop-star spawn, Kimberly Stewart (daughter of Rod) would be replacing Lionel Richie's daughter as her sidekick on the reality show's fourth season. Fox, however, has yet to confirm any changes in the show, saying in a statement, ''We are currently discussing internally the creative direction of the next The Simple Life.''

Last week, Hilton put a much more positive spin on the Simple Life split, saying that Richie was simply too busy for a fourth season. A report on TV's The Insider said she was proposing her own Fox reality show, featuring herself and her fiancé, Adam ''DJ AM'' Goldstein.
