Nouvelle Vague (2005)

Details Release Date: May 03, 2005; Lead Performance: Nouvelle Vague; Genre: Jazz

Smoky-piped chanteuses + a '60s bossa nova beat + '80s newwave chestnuts = one chouette cover band. Paris-based producers Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux (along with their crew of aspiring Keren Anns) morph 14 tunes by Depeche Mode (''Just Can't Get Enough''), Modern English (''Melt With You''), and the Clash (''Guns of Brixton''), among others, into groovy, finger-snapping sambas on Nouvelle Vague. Best track: the easy, breezy ''Girl From Ipanema'' redux of Joy Division's ''Love Will Tear Us Apart,'' which is as good as it Getz.
