Have to be careful of the crossed legs at this point,'' says MacLaine of her meditation habits. ''Aggravates things that shouldn't be aggravated.'' Back at her condo overlooking the Sangre de Cristo Mountain range, Shirley perches on a sumptuous white couch, receives Terry in her lap, and flips on the TV. ''I've gotten to the point where I can meditate and watch CNN at the same time. So I don't miss any news.''

She's still a yellow-dog Democrat, but politics are mostly behind her (''I don't even know what I'd say anymore''). Movies, on the other hand, will constitute a large part of what she calls ''the last third of my life.'' She's raising money for an independent film from ''a writer I found through my chiropractor.''

Save Terry, she's mostly alone in her desert redoubt. Shirley has always taken care of Shirley, and she doesn't see that changing, not in this life or any other. In a low voice, as if she knows the information will irk someone, she confides, ''I'm going to live a long time.''
