Spaceballs: The Collector's Edition (2005)

Shameless and relentless, Mel Brooks' space-opera parody, Spaceballs, makes up in persistence what it lacks in precision. Moranis, Candy, and Brooks lob punchlines while ostensible leads Bill Pullman and Daphne Zuniga are stuck with the straight stuff. (Fair enough — Han Solo got all the good lines too.) The scattergun approach works: The spoofs on marketing tie-ins and insecure tyrants have grown even more relevant (but the Star Wars jokes, dated even in 1987, are no fresher now). EXTRAS ''More jokes work for me,'' Brooks admits in his 1996 commentary, in case anyone suspected otherwise. New featurettes are plentiful but not hugely enlightening, though we do learn that George Lucas vetted the script. On the silly side, you can watch 25 seconds of the movie dubbed into Mawg and Dink and play a trivia game with stumpers like ''What actor portrayed Trucker in Cap?''
