Recently, Turner has split her time between Broadway and teaching ''practical acting'' to NYU drama students. (She's lived in New York City her whole career, unwilling to raise a daughter in L.A.) ''I tried to brainwash the kids about values,'' she says. '''Don't take a job that makes you hate what you do.''' Remind Turner that she famously passed on Sharon Stone's part in Basic Instinct and she laughs and takes a swipe at your leg. ''Yes, and wasn't I right!''

Turner says she's sticking to the stage, ready for more roles with as much heft as Martha. ''I don't like O'Neill very much,'' she says. ''There's no humor. Very boring. Suffering, suffering, suffering! Certainly there's some Beckett I might do.'' Dinner arrives, and she tears into the meat.
