Moonlighting's Hawksian battle of the sexes made for great entertainment — both on and off screen. With season 1 and 2 finally on DVD, Shepherd is all smiles about her days as Maddie Hayes.
You had a lot riding on Moonlighting. Any worries that your comeback was
tied to an ex-bartender from Jersey?
I had no qualms at all. Even before success, Bruce [Willis] had that
chutzpah. He had that spark. He was full of himself the minute I met
him, and then he simply fulfilled himself.
You two created your own sparks, too.
We had the real stuff. I went to the network and did readings with,
like, 17 different men. And I felt no spark with them. But with Bruce,
the temperature in the room went 20 degrees higher. For me, anyway.
Yet that chemistry had a dark side, no?
It's hard to do a show and keep your relationships with everybody. I
remember at one point in the show, it had gotten to where we just hated
each other. It was a very volatile show anyway, but that's also what
made it great.
Where would David and Maddie be today?
[Laughs] People want to see that, but when I saw [creator] Glenn [Gordon
Caron], I mentioned that, and he got this look on his face like. . .pain.
Why would we revisit that? How could you ever imitate it? Just leave it
alone!
