It's described as a ''companion piece'' to his 1991 breakthrough, ''Boyz N the Hood.'' Singleton's return to smaller-scale fare after last summer's ''Shaft'' goes back to South Central to follow a 20-year-old named Jody (R&B heartthrob and MTV host Tyrese), who still lives with his mother despite being a father himself. Gooding (the younger brother of ''Boyz'' star Cuba) costars as Jody's buddy, while Rhames (who appears nearly nude in a love scene) plays his mother's new boyfriend.
This time around, the filmmaker promises an even more realistic look at a tough L.A. neighborhood. As Singleton puts it: '''Boyz N the Hood' was the island; this is the world.''
