Beautiful People

ABC Family, August 8, 10 p.m.

Starring Daphne Zuniga, Torrey DeVitto, Sarah Foret

What It's About After her husband cheats on her, Lynn Kerr (Zuniga) moves from small-town New Mexico to New York City with her daughters, Sophie (Foret) and Karen (DeVitto).

What to Expect ''It's not going to turn into a soap opera with these highly sensationalized stories,'' says Melrose Place vet Zuniga. ''But I'm not a very saccharine-y woman, either, so we're going to push the edge.'' Though it's on ABC Family, that doesn't preclude some touchy story lines — eating disorders, drug use, Lynn's very special friendship with a now-married ex. As DeVitto says, ''I was like, This is ABC Family? My God.''

Why We're Optimistic It's got plenty of crowd-pleasing elements — small-town girls making good, valuable life lessons, mother-daughter relationships, class struggles, love triangles, and that glowy lighting that makes any obstacle seem surmountable. Plus, it lives up to its name. Says executive producer Paul Stupin (Dawson's Creek), ''We have a cast that you can't take your eyes off of.''
