Surfer 'Girl'

Plus, John Travolta's decides between two new roles, and more

IN THE PIPELINE Director John Stockwell better boogie if he wants Imagine's ''Surf Girls of Maui'' to catch the first wave into theaters: Paramount's waxing up its own surfer chick flick, called ''Girl in the Curl,'' recently rewritten by Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow (''Toy Story''). While ''Maui'' showcases an ensemble of bikinied babes, ''Girl'' focuses on an Army brat. Producer Donald De Line has met with Julia Stiles, who showed some fancy footwork in ''Save the Last Dance,'' about getting on board.

ICE, MEN John Travolta says he's deciding between two projects to follow ''Domestic Disturbance,'' the thriller he's currently filming. One is ''Angry White Men,'' produced by Joel Silver, about vengeful victims of corporate downsizing; the other, Sony's ''Black Ice,'' is based on former crime reporter Michael Connelly's novel about a down and out cop. Travolta, who left the set of the Sony movie ''The Double'' five years ago after a creative dispute with director Roman Polanski, says that because ''The Double'' was never made, ''Sony and I had to settle on an agreeable makeup project.'' Although Travolta has yet to read the script, written by Scott Rosenberg, he says, ''I think this [project] will be it.''

SKETCH ARTISTS Travolta's ''Disturbance'' costars Vince Vaughn and Steve Buscemi were recently involved in a bar brawl (''Ice'''s Rosenberg was with the actors); now the pair is considering taking on Siegfried & Roy. ''If there's an actors' strike, I thought we could do a variety show with bands, sketches, and improv in Las Vegas,'' says Vaughn. In addition to Buscemi, ''I've talked with Paul Reubens. I haven't asked Janeane Garofalo yet, but I will, because she's one of my faves.''
