RAISED BY KANE Batman first appeared in Detective Comics No. 27 (above) in 1939, about a year after the same publisher's success with Superman prompted a search for more superheroes. ''The Bat-Man'' (as he was sometimes called then) was the creation of artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, though for nearly 40 years, only Kane received credit. Early on, Batman already had many of his famous attributes — the pointy-eared cowl, the black cape, the logo on his chest, the utility belt, and the backstory: He was actually wealthy playboy Bruce Wayne, who'd been inspired to become a crimefighter after seeing his parents killed by a mugger. Batman was a dark loner who wasn't trusted by police, but DC soon began to soften him. A year after his debut, Bruce Wayne took in another orphan who'd seen his parents die, teenager Dick Grayson, who served alongside Batman as Robin, the Boy Wonder.
