E. L. Doctorow

Insiders are calling his latest, ''The March,'' the best book of the year

Age 74

Mustworthiness Publishing insiders are calling his long-awaited Civil War epic The March the best book of the year.

March Enemies Doctorow focuses on Sherman's infamous swath through the South, populating his world with unforgettable fictional characters who drive a smoky, blood-soaked narrative. ''As a novelist you try to render what it is like to be caught up in that march if you are a freed slave, or a plantation owner, a Union general, a Confederate soldier, a society belle,'' says the Ragtime author. ''I have tried to give voice to them all.''

And Speaking of Long Marches. . . Doctorow says he's been thinking about The March for 20 years. ''I felt now was the time to get busy, possibly for whatever vibrations I felt from our own time.''

Next The March hits shelves Sept. 20.
