He brings the same techniques to The City of Falling Angels, a nonfiction tale of arson, old money, and a suspicious death in Venice, where Berendt has lived off and on for nine years.
After 'Midnight' Berendt had a couple of false starts in pursuing his second book, including researching a married couple who escaped from a leprosarium in the 1920s and traveled around the U.S. ''It would have been a wonderful, picturesque book about a beautiful couple. But by the time I got to them, she was gaga and he was dead.''
Next Falling Angels lands in bookstores in September.
