Nouvelle Vague

The French-based collective gives 80's classics a smooth makeover

Age 3

Mustworthiness A curious by-product of the current post-punk/new-wave revival, this France-based collective — produced by Olivier Libaux, 41, and Marc Collin, 37 — gives '80s alternative classics (Joy Division's ''Love Will Tear Us Apart,'' Modern English's ''I Melt With You'') a breezy, crème-brûlée-smooth makeover. ''I thought it would be cool to do a musical trip between Manchester and London in the '80s and Rio in the '60s,'' says Collin. The resulting album, Nouvelle Vague (''new wave'' in French), is more than just a Gen-X nostalgia trip, as a handful of songstresses — Brazilian, French, and American — unearth the elegant craft behind these Reagan-era recordings. Remarks Collin: ''Our goal was to make people understand how beautiful these songs were.''

Ignorance Is Bliss ''I didn't know the original ones, and I've still never heard them,'' says 27-year-old mono-monikered singer Camille. ''But when you don't understand the history, sometimes it's easier to use your imagination.''
