''You're scared of change!'' cracks Adrian, now 16, who's just joined him on the porch. Barely recognizable from his dad's movies, tall and skinny in a baggy shirt and basketball shorts, the younger McElwee is making his own movie this summer, a short doc for a local skateboard shop.
''Adrian keeps encouraging me to make a feature,'' McElwee explains.
''Just one!'' says Adrian, who would like to live in a house with a bigger backyard. ''Something I'd see flipping the channels on TV.''
''Well,'' McElwee says cheekily, with a dramatic sigh, ''I'm a big disappointment to my son so far.''
''Noooooo,'' protests a grinning Adrian. ''That's not true.'' Like a scene out of a McElwee film, it sneaks up and warms the heart.
