A forensic psychiatrist struggles with alcoholism, an estranged son, and, of course, ''demons''; his love interest is a no-nonsense FBI agent who also happens to be totally hot. Clichés abound as Dr. Frank Clevenger, in his sixth outing, sets out after West Crosse, an architectural genius whose freakish skills with a scalpel are carving a trail of corpses that just might lead (dum-dum-dum) to the White House. But Keith Ablow throws in some pretty astute (and liberal) sociopolitical commentary in The Architect — the intrigue here surrounds Yale's Bush-friendly Skull and Bones secret society and the danger of anyone who tries to play God. The pages turn faster than you can say ''taut psychological thriller.''
