WHAT 'SIX FEET UNDER' IS GETTING RIGHT

A Few Good Meds

What ''Six Feet Under'' is doing right -- The HBO show gives an honest depiction of mental illness

Many (EW included) have criticized HBO's Six Feet Under this year for being depressing, which is ironic since the best part of SFU's fifth and final season is its depiction of mental illness. Now that Billy (Jeremy Sisto) has gone off the meds that treat his bipolar disorder, his mania has returned, and George's (James Cromwell) paranoia has led him to electroconvulsive therapy. ''It realistically depicts what someone with the kind of mental illness each of them has would go through,'' says Dr. Rona Bernadette, of New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Westchester. Now that SFU is back to Sundays (9 p.m.), hopefully more people will see this honest portrayal.
