So what's the big difference between ABC's Lost, where malevolent forces run rampant on a spooky beach, and director Rupert Wainwright's low-budget remake of John Carpenter's 1980 frightfest, where, uh, malevolent forces run rampant on a spooky beach? ''Shower scenes with Tom Welling,'' jokes Maggie Grace, who stars in both. What isn't different is dealing with high expectations from hardcore fans. ''John Carpenter is a genius, but in the original there were a lot of unanswered story questions we try to answer a little more,'' says Grace of tinkering with the genre classic. ''We've had some developments in technology since 1980, and I think we're a bit better equipped now. He had, like, two fog machines.''
