The biopic focuses on the diminutive writer (Philip Seymour Hoffman) at his career crossroads: On the edge of finishing reporting his most heralded work, the pioneering true-crime history In Cold Blood, Capote was torn between his growing friendship with his death-row-inmate subjects and his impatience for their execution, which would give his book the ending it needed. (It's the first of two Capote biopics tackling the same momentous era of the writer's life; Have You Heard? follows next year.) ''This is a guy who wanted something so badly that he became insensitive to what he was trampling on to get it,'' says director Bennett Miller (The Cruise). ''If you look around today, whether in politics or business or celebrity, that kind of narcissism seemed to have been born in the era of Capote.'' Thanks a lot, Truman.
