Paul Giamatti

Giamatti's own sixth sense about his peculiar appeal is that, Cinderella Man aside, directors (and audiences) see him as ''the sort of guy that's awkward in his own skin.'' He digs it. ''I'm interested in the slightly misanthropic aspects of these guys,'' says Giamatti, adding that success has stirred within him a strange and alien urge, something called...ambition. He might produce. He might try to develop his dream project, a biopic of sci-fi author Philip K. Dick. Or...he might not. ''I still feel most comfortable going from job to job, finding work where I can, being part of an ensemble, hopefully keep doing stuff that interests me,'' says Giamatti. ''It's all been a wonderful fluke. And I'm sure it will all end.'' If this Cinder- fella's end means ''happily ever after,'' we couldn't agree more.

Benched!

Six big guns who found themselves outshined by the season's underdogs

TOM CRUISE How do you know when you've made an unwise PR move? When you score the biggest box office smash of your career (War of the Worlds), and it's the last thing people want to talk about when your name comes up at a cocktail party.

RUSSELL CROWE That phone-chucking incident isn't really to blame for Cinderella Man's middling receipts — the film had already opened by then. But only time will tell whether Crowe's poor conduct will lead the Academy to hang up on him next year.

WILL FERRELL We're glad he's become one of our go-to comedy gods. But after assaulting us with Kicking & Screaming, Bewitched, and that smug Wedding Crashers cameo, he needs to learn that less-is-more thing.

ORLANDO BLOOM, ICE CUBE, AND JOSH LUCAS With the failed openings of Kingdom of Heaven ($19.6 million), XXX: State of the Union ($12.7 million), and Stealth ($13.3 million), three fine actors got schooled in the same lesson: On the road to leading-man stardom, the action-hero route is often the least interesting path.
