ENGAGED
The Brothers Grimm star Matt Damon, 34, proposed to his girlfriend, Luciana Barroso, over Labor Day weekend. No wedding date has been announced. It will be the first marriage for Damon and the second for Barroso.

COURTS
A Las Vegas jury ruled on Sept. 7 that Rod Stewart, 60, must return a $2 million advance to the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, which had filed a breach of contract suit when Stewart canceled a millennium New Year's Eve concert after being diagnosed with thyroid cancer. A lawyer for Stewart (who has since recovered) says the singer tried to reschedule the concert and plans to appeal.... June Pointer Whitmore, 51, former member of the Pointer Sisters singing group, was ordered to enter a rehab program for the next 18 months on Sept. 7 after pleading guilty to cocaine possession.... Original Survivor champ Richard Hatch, 44, was indicted Sept. 8 on 10 counts of tax evasion and fraud, including allegedly failing to report his $1 million Survivor win jackpot and using funds donated to his charity, Horizon Bound, for personal expenses. Hatch faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted. Hatch's attorney said the charges are ''unfair.''... Kelly Allen Frank, 43, the man accused of plotting to kidnap David Letterman's son and nanny earlier this year, was sentenced to 10 years in prison in Choteau, Mont., for embezzlement and poaching, after reaching a plea bargain in which the kidnapping charge was dropped. Frank maintains his innocence.... A U.N. agency gave comedian Bill Cosby, 68, control of the Internet domain name fatalbert.org, which uses the title of the 1960s character created by Cosby. The domain's previous owner, Sterling Davenport, had allegedly been linking it to ''sexually explicit'' sites. Davenport didn't return EW's phone calls for comment.

PROMOTED
Former Warner Bros. executive vice president Bruce Rosenblum, 47, was named president of the newly created Warner Bros. Television Group on Sept. 7. In his new position, Rosenblum will oversee several Warner Bros. divisions, including The WB network.

PREMIERE
''Being shot in 2003, it's already turned into a period piece, which is quite amazing,'' joked director Lasse Hallström, with his An Unfinished Life star Jennifer Lopez Sept. 7 in NYC, of the much-delayed film. ''I really enjoyed that period.''

TELEVISION
A note to Sawyer on Lost: ''Freckles'' is pecas in Spanish. On Sept. 8, ABC announced it will offer its entire prime-time lineup en español through closed-captioning, while dubbing Lost, Desperate Housewives, George Lopez, and the new sitcom Freddie. ''We wanted to move beyond toe-dipping and really dive in,'' said ABC Entertainment president Stephen McPherson. And just so you know, Evangeline Lilly en español is ¡muy caliente!

AILING
Pop singer Kelly Clarkson, 23, canceled the last three shows of her current tour, Sept. 13-16, due to bronchitis. The dates will be rescheduled for later this year.

DEATHS
Clarence ''Gatemouth'' Brown, 81, a guitarist and singer known for his unique mixture of blues, R&B, and country, following a struggle with cancer, Sept. 10, after being evacuated from New Orleans to Orange, Tex.... Network executive Perry Lafferty, 87, who brought the classic comedies All in the Family and M*A*S*H to CBS, and the groundbreaking 1985 AIDS movie An Early Frost to the small screen, of complications from prostate cancer, Aug. 25, in Century City, Calif.
