It's sweet that schizoid auteur Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Spy Kids) made a movie with his children, but do we really have to watch it? A parboiled fusion of The Phantom Tollbooth and The Wizard of Oz, The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D is as cluttered as a kid's bedroom, with amateurish performances and 3-D scenes that appear to have been filmed through swamp water (the DVD offers an easier-on-the-eyes 2-D version). EXTRASHome video of the Rodriguez family and director's commentary show how Adventures was scripted and storyboarded by 7-year-old Racer Max Rodriguez with help from his dad and brothers. (Where was Mom in all this? And why is the hero's mother, played by Sex and the City's Kristin Davis, a total shrew?) If this prompts your own spawn to break out the video camera, terrific — they couldn't do much worse.
