''Flightplan'' lands at No. 1 -- The Jodie Foster thriller earns $24.6 million its first weekend, beating out ''Corpse Bride''

Movie audiences welcomed back Jodie Foster with a No. 1 debut for her new thriller, Flightplan.

Marking the two-time Oscar winner's first lead role in three and a half years, Flightplan premiered this weekend with $24.6 million, according to studio estimates. That figure falls short of her last big release, Panic Room, which grossed $30.1 million in 2002, but it was enough to beat the new animated release Corpse Bride for the top spot.

Corpse Bride, the latest collaboration between Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, placed second with $20.1 million, a tally that may have been limited by the film's gory title, which belied the family-friendly nature of the film.

Last week's top film, Just Like Heaven, slipped 40 percent to $9.8 million. After 10 days, the Reese Witherspoon romance has earned $30 million.

The new retro comedy Roll Bounce placed fourth in its opening weekend with an $8 million debut, just ahead of The Exorcism of Emily Rose, which added another $7.5 million to its now $62.3 million tally.
