It's 1934, and courtroom legend Clarence Darrow has persuaded Henry Ford to bankroll a ball game for the ages between Major League and Negro League stars. Shoeless Joe Jackson suits up alongside Babe Ruth, Dizzy Dean, and a hot prospect named DiMaggio — all battling Josh Gibson, Cool Papa Bell, and the irrepressible Satchel Paige. Even George Raft and Carole Lombard — fresh from a Hollywood orgy — claim front-row seats. Kevin King peppers All the Stars Came Out That Night with famous baseball witticisms (especially Paige's), but his real skill lies in the deft handling of the contest's underlying theme: blacks fighting for a place on the field as well as in the history books. Despite some overblown oratory, King's fantasy for seamheads is in a league of its own.
