KATE TOSS
No, we were not shocked by the revelation courtesy of the Sept. 15 cover
of the Daily Mirror that Kate Moss did cocaine. What is disturbing? The
fashion community's hypocritical response to the ''news.'' Whether
claiming, like cosmetics brand Rimmel, to be ''shocked and dismayed,'' or
dropping Moss from ad campaigns (H&M, Chanel, and Burberry all withdrew
or declined to renew her contract), the industry finds itself in the
awkward position of being mortified by an image it once embraced: the
dead-eyed, wafer-thin party girl Moss represented when she debuted more
than a decade ago. One can only hope Moss saved some of the dollars she
made from the image, and uses them to get help, get healthy...and get
out.
HONORS ROLL
Nelly's gleaming grill looked right at home on the gold yes, gold carpet
at VH1 Hip Hop Honors on Sept. 22 in NYC (it aired on VH1 Sept. 26).
Snoop Dogg, Common, Queen Latifah, and others paid tribute to LL Cool J,
Big Daddy Kane, Salt-N-Pepa, Ice-T, and Notorious B.I.G. Nelly and Ciara
offered a blazing rendition of LL Cool J's ''Doin' It,'' while Kanye West
covered Biggie's ''Hypnotize.'' Salt-N-Pepa ''superfan'' Eve gave props to
her girls, who reunited with En Vogue to perform ''Whatta Man.'' ''If it
wasn't for these pioneers,'' said the rapper (in a sparkly Sonia Rykiel
top), ''we wouldn't be here.''
