Chick Grit
I could write a novel about how thrilled I was to see two of music's
most beautiful, talented, and outspoken artists sharing the cover of
your magazine, but in the interest of brevity, I can sum up my reaction
with three little words: Best Cover Ever.

The Sheryl Crow and Fiona Apple cover photo makes them look like music's
ElectraWoman and DynaGirl, ready to lay the smackdown on all the
Lindsays, Hilarys, and Ashlees. We need more real voices like these two,
keeping singer-songwriting integrity safe, not to mention
listener-friendly.

Apple Appeal
Kudos for your explicit and in-depth article on Fiona Apple (''The
Extraordinary Truth''). I love Apple for her blatant honesty. She is
truly one of today's most innovative artists, and I'm thankful she's
coming back. That very article connected with me and made me want to
write music again. It's also so nice to hear that fans can indeed make a
difference when they pull together.

'Night' to Remember
Thanks for the sneak peek at the new incarnation of The Night Stalker (''Diary of a 'Night Stalker'''). While I appreciate the time Frank
Spotnitz spends relating his wrangling with updating the original, it's
a pity he couldn't take a line or two to acknowledge the producer of the
original movie, Dan Curtis, or at the very least the legendary Richard
Matheson, to whom all horror television writers owe a tremendous debt.

I was 6 years old when The Night Stalker aired as an ABC Movie of the
Week. I didn't know that until I read Frank Spotnitz's article in EW.
What I did know is that for 33 years, segments from that movie would
still come back to haunt me...deliciously. Kudos to Spotnitz for taking
on the daunting task of scaring me for the next 33 years.

Jumping for Jodie
I so enjoyed your recent article on Jodie Foster (''Air Jodie''). Talk
about someone who knows the ins and outs, ups and downs of the acting
profession! I appreciate her candor talking about the state of modern
films and some of the reasons she chooses to do what she does. Now every
time I see Jodie Foster in a movie I'll know she didn't choose the role
lightly and that she has faith in the film/filmmaker.

Letterman Perfect
Why the shock over David Letterman not Leno saluting Johnny Carson
(''Surprise Patrol,'' News & Notes)? Letterman was Carson's rightful heir,
but network politics got in the way. Johnny had a consistent, upbeat,
and somewhat unpredictable vibe that Letterman has continued (although
with more of a zany edge); Leno just has shtick. I doubt Leno would have
been able to muster the class Letterman showed on Emmy night, and I was
glad to see Dave get the chance to honor his mentor.
