Alice

No. 3

THE STORY This 1988 version of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland retells the story using Claymation and other stop-motion animation techniques to create a sophisticated, Dadaist world of uneasy dreams. The film is the signature work of Czech animator Jan Svankmajer, who (along with England's Brothers Quay) mines a modernist European art sensibility to create stop-motion works that are more for thoughtful adults than for kids.

ON DVD The DVD includes a stunning, existential Svankmajer Claymation short, ''Darkness/Light/Darkness.''
