Say Anything's frontman agrees. Reached at the Texas clinic where he is recovering, a lucid-sounding Bemis reports that he is optimistic thanks in part to ''an intensive adjusting of my [medications].'' Bemis says the clinic is keeping him busy with ''a lot of classes and groups...you can really learn a lot about yourself from listening to other people and their input.

''When I get out of here,'' he continues, ''I just really want to spend time with my friends. And I want to start demoing the new tracks I've been working on for the next album. At this point I've found a really spiritual path, and that's helped me a great amount. I used to live in fear of death — fear just overwhelmed my life. Today, there's a lot of hope for tomorrow in me.'' Hey, maybe it'll be a banner year after all.
