The Right Actor, Wrong Category Award goes to... Steve Carell

FOR The Office

WHY? Here's a question for you: Why does the HFPA bother to separate movie nominees into two categories — musical/comedy or drama — only to ignore the films and performances that made us laugh the hardest? Case in point: The 40 Year-Old Virgin's Steve Carell. The dude had his chest hair ripped out in the name of comedy; not only did he deserve to be one of the six nominees for best actor in a musical or comedy, he deserved to be the frontrunner to take home the prize. (Yeah, we know Joaquin Phoenix did all his own singing, but Walk the Line still belongs in the drama department.) When it's all said and done, Carell will have to take solace in his consolation prize — a nod for his work on NBC's ratings-challenged sitcom The Office — but we remain staunchly indignant.

(Golden Globe nomination: Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series — Musical or Comedy)
