FOR Weeds

WHY? The only certainty at this year's Golden Globes is that the woman who takes home the statuette for best actress in a TV comedy will do so for playing a desperate suburban dweller. Just don't bet the mortgage that she'll be a cast member of ABC's Desperate Housewives. Sure, four-fifths of the nominees in the category — Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, Eva Longoria, and last year's winner, Teri Hatcher — reside on Wisteria Lane, but what if the quartet splits the vote? And what if, like us, members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association have detected a decided drop in the quality of Housewives' season 2 scripts? It's a distinct possibility that at least a few voters will be looking to zig in another direction. And when the alternative is to reward a past Globe winner's wry work as a pot-dealing, neighborhood mom on Showtime's critical favorite, Weeds... well, you'd have to be high to dismiss the possibility of a Parker upset.

(Golden Globe nomination: Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series — Musical or Comedy)
