We're not stupid. We know that on Oscar night, a raunchy comedy about a nerdy middle-aged virgin isn't likely to be getting any. Still, the Academy did give Sideways a place at the grown-ups' table last year, and while The 40 Year-Old Virgin may lack that movie's art-house-friendly soliloquies about pinot noir, its insight into the more embarrassing corners of the male psyche is just as hilariously spot-on.
The Writers Guild has recognized the film's horny/sweet balance with a nod for best original screenplay. Now it's up to Oscar voters to loosen up a bit, get their freak on, and make Virgin's wildest fantasies come true.
