IN THE 'HOUSE' Martin Lawrence is a hit in drag

Multiplexes across the country this weekend were dominated by Martin Lawrence in drag, as Big Momma's House 2 premiered with an impressive $28 million, according to studio estimates.

Despite a five-and-a-half-year absence, Lawrence's Big Momma character actually topped the $25.7 million opening weekend of the first Big Momma's House in June 2000. We'll see how much audiences love this type of film when Tyler Perry opens Madea's Family Reunion, the follow-up to Diary of a Mad Black Woman, next month.

Second place went to Emma Thompson's family comedy Nanny McPhee, which debuted with $14.1 million, ahead of Underworld: Evolution, which plummeted 59 percent in its second weekend to $11.1 million.

The weekend's other new wide release, the military drama Annapolis, premiered with a mediocre $7.7 million, while Hoodwinked logged one more week in the top five with $7.4 million, down 29 percent. Sixth place, meanwhile, went to Brokeback Mountain, whose $6.4 million take pushed the award-winning drama past the $50 million mark. Expect that number to rise after the film racks up plenty of Academy Award nominations this Tuesday.
