Box Office Report

Perfect 'Stranger'

''A Stranger'' knocks ''Big Momma'' out of No. 1. The remake opened strong with $22 million

Martin Lawrence was no match for a babysitter in peril, as When A Stranger Calls knocked Big Momma's House 2 out of the top spot at the box office this weekend.

The Stranger remake, starring Camilla Belle, premiered with a strong $22 million, according to studio estimates, displacing Momma, which dropped 52 percent in its second weekend to $13.4 million. After 10 days, the Martin Lawrence sequel has grossed $45.4 million.

Third place went to Emma Thompson's Nanny McPhee, which slipped 32 percent to $9.9 million, while Brokeback Mountain rode its 8 Oscar nominations to fourth place with $5.7 million. Its tally of $59.8 million means it has now surpassed Crash ($53.4 million) to become the highest-grossing Best Picture nominee of the year.

Hoodwinked managed to log one final week in the top five, grossing another $5.3 million, while the interracial romance Something New opened in seventh place with a mediocre $5 million. Looks like most moviegoers were interested in something...else.
