A dying-to-be-cathartic drama of American racial turmoil. It's set in and around a New Jersey housing project, where Brenda (Julianne Moore) claims she was the victim of a carjacking. Samuel L. Jackson is the cop who pries the truth out of her. Strenuous and joyless, the film keeps showing you the seams of its good intentions.
