SELDOM IS HEARD A DISCOURAGING WORD WHEN COWBOY TROY HOSTS 'STAR'
Cowboy Troy: Matthias Clamer

TUESDAY

MARCH 14

SEASON PREMIERE
10-11:30 PM Nashville Star (USA, TV-PG) Tired of the sniping on American Idol? Try this grand ol' talent show, where season 4 cohost Cowboy Troy never met anything or anybody he didn't like. Troy's other hosting half, Wynonna Judd, is ''a great person.'' The contest will have ''a good impact.'' And forget about getting him to trash-talk his Idol competition: ''I don't think it's an either/or thing.'' Why so nice, C.T.? ''Goodness gracious, it wouldn't do any good to be loud, long, and wrong.'' Apparently, Idol is one train Cowboy Troy won't play chicken with. —Whitney Pastorek

6PM-MIDNIGHT Birth Day LIVE! (Discovery Health Channel, TV-PG) Watch other people's kids being born.

8-10PM American Idol (Fox, TV-G) How did you celebrate when Brenna left? Me, I did a jig and sang ''Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead'' like a drunk Munchkin.

SERIES RETURN
8-8:30PM Joey (NBC, TV-14) Joey's upset that Carmen Electra has a bigger billboard than he does. Aww, buck up, Joe. I don't think you'll have to worry about billboards for much longer.

9-10PM The Unit (CBS) The mission is somewhere in Africa. The downed satellite they're after is Chinese. But the terrorist they catch along the way? His butt belongs to Uncle Sam.
