As a longtime fan of Peter Blauner, I've often wondered why he isn't a name brand (books like The Last Good Day are way, way better than most blockbuster thrillers). That valentine aside, however, Slipping Into Darkness disappoints. The characters, in Blauner fashion, are pitch-perfect: a creaky, slightly rusty NYPD detective and the kid he helped put away for murder 20 years before. But the mystery is all too easy to solve, turning on ho-hum a tricky question of DNA. I like the fact that Blauner doesn't feel compelled to churn out a book a year; here's hoping he'll take his sweet time crafting the next one.
