In his book In Character: Actors Acting (Bulfinch, $50), photographer Howard Schatz snapped dozens of actors, including Richard Dreyfuss and Don Cheadle, while directing them in specific scenarios. He instructed Sopranos star Edie Falco to portray a mother thinking about how to tell her kids that she's leaving their dad and a little girl telling her mom that her twin brother said a dirty word. ''They could let go of their persona in an instant,'' Schatz says. ''They would scream and spit and swear. That's what actors do.''
