''I always thought of A Scanner Darkly as a graphic novel come to life,'' explains director Richard Linklater of his adaptation (due July 7) of the head-stretching Philip K. Dick novel about paranoia and drugs, starring Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr., and Ryder. He pulled it off the same way he did Waking Life, his last trippy animated movie. First you shoot and edit it like a film, then turn it over to animators who first outline it, then color inside the lines. Voilá! A new Winona!
