Hopkins, in a mesmerizing dual role, actually throws his voice between fearful ventriloquist Corky and his homicidal dummy, Fats. The actor's dexterous timing and Richard Attenborough's crafty direction make us wonder if the sleight of hand is something more ghoulish, especially as the bodies begin piling up. EXTRAS In the campy featurette ''Fats & Friends,'' consultant Dennis Alwood describes the ''spontaneous schizophrenia'' that can afflict even the sanest ventriloquists — as Hopkins experienced, when Fats shouted ''Cut!'' one day on the set.
