Steve Martin courts accusations of egotism by casting himself in Shopgirl, (his adaptation of his novella, adapted from his life) as the older gent who nobly cuts Claire Danes' shut-in loose despite being irresistible to her. Jason Schwartzman's deadpan, Danes' depth, and the painterly cinematography get tilled under by all the self-focus. EXTRAS In ''Evolution of a Novella,'' Martin says he considered asking Tom Hanks to play his role, ''but I think actually this turned out well.'' And what does it say that Anand Tucker, who calls Martin ''one of my absolute heroes,'' was chosen to direct?
