It's that time of year — when television networks decide which shows to keep and which to ditch. The decision-making is extra tough this season, because there have been few outright bombs — or hits (the top-ranked
freshman is The Unit at No. 11). Here, a rundown:
ABC Commander in Chief is teetering on the brink of cancellation in its new
Thursday time slot, and the network might save Sons & Daughters if it can develop a good companion show. As for Invasion? Its fate hangs on how upcoming episodes perform.
CBS The Eye will be scrutinizing Out of Practice and Courting Alex (the
higher-rated Practice will likely get the nod). While Close to Home would be safe at a weaker net, ''[the success of] The Unit has raised the bar pretty high for new stuff,'' says senior exec VP Kelly Kahl.
NBC Stability rules at the third-place network, which may keep poor performer Conviction (''The show's in good shape and getting better,'' says exec VP of programming Mitch Metcalf), and Scrubs. ''You don't want
to throw things away willy-nilly,'' Metcalf adds.
THE CW The WB/UPN hybrid faces some tough calls — particularly when it comes to
critical darlings Everwood and Veronica Mars. Young demographics could
save fan favorite One Tree Hill.
Fox The Bernie Mac Show looks likely to retire, but The O.C. (a critical
letdown this season) and The War at Home stand a decent chance of
returning. ''The tendency is to think we can do better,'' says exec VP Preston Beckman. ''But a bird in the hand gets you farther.''
