Sebastian Junger

The war reporter and author of ''A Death in Belmont'' invites us into his inner sanctum

MAN AT WAR
''That's me the day Kabul fell [while I was] filing a report to ABC. We were right on the front line.'' Seconds after the photo was taken, a mortar hit near where Junger was standing.

FULL METAL JACKET
''I was embedded with U.S. [Army] Rangers in Afghanistan. You did everything but go to sleep with this [bulletproof] vest on. You never knew when someone would start shooting.''

HOUSE OF BLUES
''When I was 22, I got lessons from a harmonica player who used to play for Muddy Waters. About 10 years ago, some friends of mine and I put together a band called Willy and the Po' Boys. For a few years we played in the basement of a bar in Provincetown.''

WORLD TOUR
Junger has held on to all his passports. The newer one, has stamps from ''Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Sierra Leone.'' The other is circa 1962: ''I'm one year old. There's a hideous baby picture inside.''

ON THE EDGE
This sword is a standout in Junger's collection. ''In 2001, I was in Kabul and I picked it up for about five bucks on Chicken Street, which is where you get all the crazy old stuff floating around Afghanistan. It's an old British sword. I keep going to countries that have crazy knives. I don't have some fetish or anything.''
