Stage Review

Festen (2006)

EW's GRADE
C

Details Opening Date: Apr 09, 2006; Lead Performance: Michael Hayden; Writer: David Eldridge; Director: Rufus Norris

Family reunions are often unpleasant, but the gathering in Festen, based on Danish auteur Thomas Vinterberg's 1998 movie, is a doozy. Toasting his well-to-do father's 60th birthday, Christian (Michael Hayden) accuses his dad (Larry Bryggman) of molesting him and his twin sister, who recently killed herself. In a production that feels slack overall, it's a rare moment that crackles. And the cast seems slightly (sometimes wildly) off, from ER 's Julianna Margulies as another fraught sibling to Ali MacGraw as the family grande dame to a histrionic Jeremy Sisto, still channeling Billy from Six Feet Under.
