A-
Just when it seems truly personal, idiosyncratic Hollywood filmmaking is dimming, along comes The New World, Terrence Malick's hypnotic reimagining of Jamestown's founding and the romance between John Smith (a properly subdued Colin Farrell) and Pocahontas (an ethereal Q'orianka Kilcher). EXTRAS Malick doesn't provide commentary, but an hourlong doc in which cast and crew talk almost too reverently about the director's love of physical textures, natural lighting, and spontaneity gives an intriguing glimpse into how he shapes such an original vision.
