This Norwegian band's self-titled debut, Serena-Maneesh, is a painstaking homage to the swirling psychedelic sounds of early-'90s British shoegazer bands like My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. They're awfully good at it. Creating hypnotic, atmospheric rock is all about texture, and each track blooms with layer upon layer of six-string sonics from jangly strums to chewy fuzz tones to blistering feedback. Sure, this speaker-frying style has been done before, but rarely with such confidence. Just submit to the waves of sound and the ethereal vocals, and space out for an hour.
