Jonathon King, a Florida newsman-turned-novelist best known for his Max Freeman series, sticks to what he knows in this stand-alone thriller about a Florida crime reporter who suspects a serial sniper is offing the subjects of his stories. With shout-outs to the 2002 Beltway sniper case, Harry Potter, the Twin Towers, and Tikrit, King adeptly imbues his hard-boiled narrative with a real-life context, while also taking potshots at the proliferation of ''all flash and no substance'' spin journalism. A brisk, riveting read saddled with a somewhat overwrought title, Eye of Vengeance virtually operates as a morality play posed as pulp mystery, less concerned with the usual whodunit than it is with the why.
