SILENCE IS GOLDEN Keeping Al Swearengen quiet for much of ''Deadwood: Season 2'' let characters like Alma Garret (Molly Parker) get a word in edgewise

Deadwood: The Complete Second Season's gamble — turning cuss-happy Al Swearengen into a mute patient for several episodes as the frontier town prepares to join civilization — pays off. Ian McShane remains an acting juggernaut without dialogue, and his verbal hiatus gives us time to enjoy new characters.

EXTRAS ''Trusting the Process'' reveals how creator David Milch alters major story arcs and confers with actors about character subtext. ''Quite honestly, I don't think I understand 50 percent of the stuff he's saying,'' admits costar Timothy Olyphant. ''But when he's done talking, I think, We might win a Nobel Prize.''
