A natural companion to Temple Grandin's 2005 best-seller Animals in Translation, Amy Sutherland's breezy new book, Kicked, Bitten, and Scratched will appeal to fans of the furry, the scaled, and the hooved. Sutherland, who grew up with pet dogs, cats, ducks, turtles, and doves, spent a year at California's Moorpark College, home to the premier Exotic Animal Training and Management Program. The animals are rightly her main characters, from Happy, the underweight rescue alligator raised in a bathtub, to Schmoo, a celeb sea lion whose credits include Dharma & Greg and Frigidaire commercials. Sutherland has a great subject, so if her prose occasionally sags when it comes to writing about the trainers themselves, we'll throw her a bone.
