Winter Soldier, an unblinking immersion in war's ghastliest horrors drew laurels at the 1972 Cannes film festival but remained scarce until a limited 2005 run in theaters. Explicit public testimony by 125 Vietnam vets before an antiwar activist panel was filmed by some 17 documentarians, among them Pumping Iron's Robert Fiore and Harlan County USA's Barbara Kopple. The verbal tour of the trenches feels especially potent in today's political climate, but the uneven EXTRAS curiously skirt parallels to Iraq and Guantánamo Bay. A 2004 reunion of the directors yields little but self-congratulation.
