OTHER LOSERS ABC's Hope & Faith (125th), down 1.1 million, and In Justice (83rd); NBC's Conviction (88th)
OUTLOOK FOR NEXT SEASON ABC goes for newbies with Betty the Ugly and Men in Trees; NBC lines up veterans Deal or No Deal, Las Vegas, and Law & Order: Criminal Intent; and The CW bets on men in spandex with Friday Night Smackdown.
Saturday
THE DEAD ZONE The broadcast networks have basically given up on the evening, so we're
not going to waste your time.
Sunday
'GREY' MATTERS Despite critical backlash and a loss of about 1.2 million viewers,
Desperate Housewives (4th) remained the top show of the evening, but
only on the strength of the first half of the season. Boosted by a
killer post-Super Bowl episode that grabbed 37.9 million, Grey'sconsistently bested the women of Wisteria Lane over the last few months.
That's why ABC's expecting it to be a serious operator on Thursdays next
season: ''Grey's is just hitting its stride now,'' Bader says. ''The other
shows on Thursday aren't growing. NBC lost a huge audience over the past
few seasons. There's no reason we can't get them back.''
OTHER WINNERS Fox's Family Guy (77th), up 300,000
OTHER LOSERS NBC's Law & Order: Criminal Intent (39th) and CBS Sunday Movie (47th), both down 1.1 million
OUTLOOK FOR NEXT SEASON The departure of Grey's makes way for family drama Brothers & Sisters, starring Calista Flockhart; The CW transports a three-pack of UPN comedies to Sunday; NBC launches Sunday Night Football; and CBS ditches its movie-of-the-week for an all-rhyming lineup with The Amazing Race, Cold Case, and Without a Trace. ''We saw how well NBC's crime dramas have done on that night,'' Kahl says. ''And knowing how well we do crime dramas, we saw an opportunity.'' That brings us to the most important moral of all this season: No crime goes unsolved on CBS.
